Deanna Caveny-Noecker, Associate Professor of Mathematics, joined Academic Affairs as Interim Associate Provost for Faculty Affairs in July 2009. Caveny-Noecker accepted a faculty position in our Department of Mathematics in 1991 and subsequently held a Post-doctoral Fellowship at the Mathematical Sciences Research Institute in Berkeley, California, and a Macquarie University Research Fellowship in Sydney, Australia. She is currently an Associate Professor and holds a B.S. in mathematics, summa cum laude, from the University of Southern Mississippi and a Ph.D. in mathematics from the University of Colorado, where she received a campus-wide Excellence in Teaching Award. Deanna served as Chair of our Department of Mathematics from 1996 through 2007 and has served on the leadership team for mathematics chairs’ workshops hosted by the American Mathematical Society. She has also been active in faculty governance, including service as an At-large Senator, as a faculty representative on two presidential search committees, on the learning community subcommittee of our SACS Quality Enhancement Plan Committee, and most recently, as Chair of our Committee on By-laws and the Faculty-Administration Manual. Caveny-Noecker has received the College’s Distinguished Advising Award and the School of Sciences and Mathematics Gordon E. Jones Distinguished Achievement Award.

Caveny-Noecker's early research was in number theory, focusing on transcendence and algebraic independence.  After stepping down as department chair, she initiated a new research program within non-associative algebras, studying categorical relationships between Jordan systems and graded Lie algebras.
