Course-Instructor Evaluations are an important tool for students to provide anonymous feedback at the end of a course about their instructors, course content, and their overall experience. Students are asked to complete evaluations online. Starting Spring 2015, in-class administration of evaluations is mandatory. Administration dates are listed on the Academic Calendar. Please visit registrar.cofc.edu/calendars, select the term, and scroll down to see the specific dates for that semester. Evaluations typically open two weeks before the last day of class and stay open until the last day of exams for each term. Results are not available to faculty until after the final grading deadline. About the Evaluations
What are Course-Instructor Evaluations?
Course-Instructor Evaluations are an important tool for students to provide anonymous feedback at the end of a course about their instructors, course content, and their overall experience.
Are the results really anonymous?
Your log in information is not submitted as part of the feedback data, therefore all Course-Instructor Evaluations results are 100% anonymous.
If evaluations are anonymous, why do I have to log in?
The login is used to:
- Verify that you are eligible to complete Course-Instructor Evaluations.
- Determine which courses are to be evaluated by you.
- Determine which courses have already been evaluated by you.
IMPORTANT NOTE: Your log in information is NOT submitted as part of the feedback data, therefore ALL Course-Instructor Evaluations results ARE ANONYMOUS.
Why are they important?
Student feedback is vital to the content and delivery of courses at CofC. Course-Instructor Evaluation results are used by faculty to improve teaching and are a component in the promotion and tenure process of faculty.
What happens to the results?
The evaluation results are viewed by College’s administrators and faculty. Information gathered is used as part of the process to improve instruction at the College of Charleston. Results, including any students' free response comments, are made available to the instructor of each section only after the final grading deadline has passed. Results are not released prior to this.
How long does it take?
Each evaluation typically takes between 5 minutes to complete, but may take more or less time depending on your personal choices.
Why are they online?
In an effort to streamline the evaluation process, CofC transitioned to an online course evaluation system. The online system is convenient, efficient and environmentally friendly.
Will instructors be able to see evaluation results before grades are posted?
No. Evaluation results are not available until after finals are complete and all grades have been posted.
How do I access the Course-Instructor Evaluation(s) for my course(s)?
Click the link, "Proceed to Course-Instructor Evaluations” on this page. You must log in using your Cougars username and password. This information is NOT submitted as part of the feedback data. ALL EVALUATIONS ARE ANONYMOUS.
You can also access your evaluations via your OAKS, MyCharleston, the CofC Mobile app, or your mobile device.
When can I provide feedback about my course(s)?
Evaluations for each semester are available during the last few weeks of most courses and are open until the last day of exams. The evaluation periods are also listed on the CofC Academic Calendar each term at registrar.cofc.edu/calendars. Instructors are required to provide time during class to administer the evaluations.
Will my instructor know if I completed the evaluation?
No. Instructors can view the response rates for their courses while evaluations are open but cannot view any other data. Evaluations are administered centrally through the College’s Blue eXplorance system and access to results are not given to faculty until after final grades are submitted.
Are instructors required to administer evaluations in class?
Yes. Starting Spring 2015, in-class administration of Course-Instructor Evaluations is mandatory. As instructors create a syllabi, we ask that they include time in the course schedules for completion of evaluations. Information about how to administer online evaluations in class is distributed to all faculty.
Can I use my mobile device to complete Course-Instructor Evaluations?
Yes, Course-Instructor Evaluations are mobile friendly. You can complete your evaluations on the "Instructor Evaluations" module in the CofC Mobile App available for Android and Apple devices or by going to coursereview.cofc.edu on your mobile device.
What are the student incentives for completing evaluations?
Students who complete evaluations for all of their courses will be entered into a drawing for priority registration (for pre-registration for courses) or an extra graduation ticket. Please feel free to remind your students about this incentive or any other encouragements you can offer them in completing all of their evaluations.
Administering Evaluations (for faculty instructors)
Am I required to administer evaluations in-class during the semester?
Yes. Institutional policy requires that you set aside 15-20 minutes to administer Course-Instructor Evaluations in class.
As a faculty member, how do I monitor my section(s)’ response rates?
Click on the course evaluation channel within OAKS. Please monitor your response rates throughout the evaluation period and encourage students to complete all of their evaluations. You can only see the response rates while evaluations are still open and will not have access to any of the results until after the final grading deadline.
What are the faculty incentives for completing evaluations?
Aside from the benefits of the student feedback itself, the Office of the Provost offers two College of Charleston iPads to be assigned to faculty members achieving good response rates. To be eligible for the iPad drawing, faculty must meet the response rate goal set for that semester in all of their sections.
How can I help increase my students’ response rates?
- Make announcements regularly in class
- Explain how student feedback is useful to you personally and to the improvement of our courses and the evaluation of faculty
- Show students how to access evaluations
- Administer evaluations in class using laptops or mobile devices (mandatory)
- Add the special link to your email signature or website during the evaluation period
How can students access evaluations?
How and when do I administer Course-Instructor Evaluations in class?
You are now required to reserve time during class to administer your Course-Instructor Evaluations. Students can easily complete evaluations on mobile devices and laptops anytime during the open administration period. You can pick any time during the open period to administer them, and our office will be having promotional events and flyers throughout the administration period. Simply pick a date, announce it to your class in advance and ask students to bring their mobile devices, and plan to provide a few extra iPads and/or ask students to share devices. On your designated day, talk about the value of student feedback or encourage students to complete their Course-Instructor Evaluations, assign a volunteer student assistant to help, leave the room for a while, and then afterwards check your response rates to see if your whole class participated. Please see the "Guidelines for In-class Administration."
