About the Course-Instructor Evaluations

What are Course-Instructor Evaluations?

Course-Instructor Evaluations are an important tool for students to provide anonymous feedback at the end of a course about their instructors, course content, and their overall experience.

Are the results really anonymous?

Yes! Your log in information is not submitted as part of the feedback data, therefore all Course-Instructor Evaluations results are 100% anonymous.

If evaluations are anonymous, why do I have to log in?

The log in is used to:

    • Verify that you are eligible to complete Course-Instructor Evaluations.
    • Determine which courses are to be evaluated by you.
    • Determine which courses have already been evaluated by you.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Your log in information is NOT submitted as part of the feedback data, therefore ALL Course-Instructor Evaluations results ARE ANONYMOUS.

Why are they important?

Student feedback is vital to the content and delivery of courses at CofC. Course-Instructor Evaluation results are used by faculty to improve teaching and are a component in the promotion and tenure process of faculty.

What happens to the results?

The results are viewed by College’s administrators and faculty. Information gathered is used as part of the process to improve instruction at the College of Charleston. Results, including any students' anonymous free response comments, are made available to the instructor of each section only after the final grading deadline has passed. Results are not released prior to this.

How long does it take?

Each questionnaire typically takes between 5 minutes to complete, but may take more or less time depending on your personal choices.

Why are they online?

In an effort to streamline the process, CofC transitioned to an online Course-Instructor Evaluation system. The online system is convenient, efficient and environmentally friendly.

Will instructors be able to see results before grades are posted?

No. Results are not available until after finals are complete and all grades have been posted.

As a faculty member, how do I monitor my section(s)’ response rates?

Click on the Course-Instructor Evaluation channel within OAKS.  Please monitor your response rates throughout the administration period and encourage students to complete all of their Course-Instructor Evaluations. What are the faculty incentives for completing Course-Instructor Evaluations?

Aside from the benefits of the student feedback itself, all faculty members achieving a 75% response rate or above in all of their included course sections are automatically entered into a drawing. From this group of eligible faculty, four will be randomly selected and given their choice of Research and Development funds or College of Charleston technology (i.e. iPad) of equal price. These winners are selected and announced twice a year: after the Fall full semester evaluation period, and after the Spring full semester evaluation period. Incentives and terms of these conditions are subject to change without notice.

How can I help increase my students’ response rates?

  1. Make announcements regularly in class
  2. Explain how student feedback is useful to you personally and to the improvement of our courses
  3. Show students how to access Course-Instructor Evaluations
  4. Administer Course-Instructor Evaluations in class using laptops or mobile devices (mandatory)
  5. Add the special link to your email signature or website during the administration period
