Harry & Reba Huge Foundation Faculty Development Grant
The Harry and Reba Huge Foundation has awarded a grant to the College of Charleston to encourage and support faculty members in developing teaching and research projects that are related to the country of Estonia. The overall goal of this initiative is to establish an ongoing relationship with the country of Estonia and to encourage student involvement.
- To enhance the research and teaching opportunities of individual faculty who are interested in projects involving the country of Estonia;
- To increase the number of faculty who are knowledgeable about programs and resources available for faculty and students in Estonia;
- To encourage faculty to learn more about Estonia so that they are prepared to lead student exchange programs in the future.
Funded projects can be new ideas or an expansion of an existing project to include Estonia. For example, scholars who work on Eastern Europe/Russia and whose work intersects with the culture, literature, history, language, natural environment, etc. of Estonia are encouraged to apply. Funding may be used for travel expenses associated with research in residence and the use of University of Tartu archives and library facilities as two examples.
A minimum of two grants of up to $5000 each will be awarded to full-time faculty members. Full time faculty include tenured and tenure-track as well as instructors and other continuing faculty. A review committee (Doryjane Birrer and Scott Poole, representing past and present chairs of the Faculty R&D committee; Lynne Ford representing the Provost; and Sue Sommer-Kresse serving as the liaison with the Huge Foundation) will review proposals and make a recommendation on awards. All proposals must follow the guidelines and be submitted with a current CV to the Provost’s Office no later than October 15, 2013. Recipients will be notified by November 1, 2013 and funds will be available immediately for selected projects. Projects and final reports must be completed no later than December 30, 2014.

Message from the Provost
I am excited about the College of Charleston partnership with the Huge Foundation and encourage all faculty whose teaching and research relate to Estonia to consider this opportunity. Having personally visited Estonia and the University of Tartu, I can attest to the beauty of the country, the passion for engagement and academic exchange by their faculty and the possibility for continuing collaboration this grant opportunity offers.
