Curriculum Resources (FAQs)

The College's Online Curriculum Management System

Curriculog™ is the College's online curriculum management system. Curriculog allows the College to maintain one, single version of each curricular proposal; provides advanced organization for proposal originators and reviewers; and offers full transparency of the workflow process. Curriculog is connected with Acalog™, the College's online catalog. This allows users to import courses and programs from next year's draft catalog to create proposals for modification. Through this integration, users are always operating with the most current information for curriculum proposals. Users also have the ability to run impact reports to see what other courses and programs would be affected by the change being proposed.

→ Open Curriculog™

Go directly to https://cofc.curriculog.com. Alternatively open Curriculog via the Faculty tab on MyCharleston. Access to the system is limited to active CofC faculty members.

While Academic Affairs oversees the Curriculog system, creating curricular proposals and the review of curriculum is a function and a responsibility of the faculty and the relevant Faculty Senate committees. Please go to the relevant webpage for additional details on these processes.

How do we propose a "New Program," "Program Change," or "Program Termination?"

Follow the steps outlined in Curriculog and summarized on the Curriculum homepage.

Curriculog is used for the following curricular proposals/changes:
  • Major/Program/Certificate : New
  • Major/Program/Certificate : Change
  • Major/Program/Certificate : Terminate
  • Minor : New
  • Minor : Change/Termination
Summary of curricular proposal/change process:
  1. Ideation: Formulate the preliminary idea within your academic department or program, and secure the support of your department chair and dean.
  2. Initial Consultation: As you prepare to make a proposal, please consult with Mark Del Mastro, Associate Provost of Curriculum and Academic Administration. Email Dr. Del Mastro, delmastromp@cofc.edu, the preliminary details of your proposal. During this consultation, we will explore your idea and help guide you along the process for the smoothest route. Topics that likely will be discussed are budgeting, curriculum mission/concept/purpose, external notification processes (e.g. CHE and SACSCOC), etc.
  3. Curriculog Submission: Collaborate with your faculty colleagues (you must include your Department Chair and Academic Dean in these conversations) and begin the appropriate form(s) within Curriculog. Tip: This may be an iterative, lengthy process, so we suggest that you start early in the academic year. Use Curriculog to monitor the status of your proposal(s), and note on your calendar the dates when your proposal will need in-person representation by the Originator (or a faculty colleague) at the appropriate Faculty Senate committee workflow step(s).
  4. Additional Consultations: Throughout the proposal process, please also consult with the relevant committees/offices (listed below); the relevant Academic Dean(s); and Mark Del Mastro, our CHE and SACSCOC liaison. Please note that most new programs (i.e., new majors, new graduate programs, etc.) and program modifications (i.e., the addition of an 18+ hour concentration, changing a concentration to a major, etc.) require approval by CHE and SACSCOC. New minors and minor modifications (i.e., changing an existing minor, or terminating) may also need SACSCOC review. Consult with Mark Del Mastro to determine the need for CHE and SACSCOC submissions.

What are the Syllabus Requirements?

As outlined in the Syllabus Policy (PDF), syllabi must be distributed at the beginning of the term for every course section. This policy describes the elements that must be included.

What is the difference between "Cross-List" and "Meets With?"
  • Cross-List means:
    • When two separate courses are equivalent in content or share content to a significant degree, but have separate course listings (e.g. two different course prefixes and/or course numbers). No student can receive credit for both versions of the course, except with the written permission of the Provost (or Provost's designee). An undergraduate course and a graduate course may only be cross-listed when the course content and student learning outcomes are satisfactorily demonstrated as more advanced for students in the 500-level course than for students in the 400-level course. See further restrictions in section 3.0 of the Course Numbering Policy.
  • "Meets With" means:
    • When courses have significantly different course content, but share facilities or other instructional resources (e.g. space, common meeting time, learning experiences such as field work or out-of-class trips, software, or guests). For example, two courses may meet at the same time in the same location, but they must be delivered separate discussions and assignments (because they are not cross-listed). Therefore, a student only receives credit for the course section they enrolled in, and is provided the syllabus for only that course section. A student may only attend the course they are enrolled in, and not any other "meets-with" courses that may be occurring in the same space at the same time. See further restrictions in section 4.0 of the Course Numbering Policy.
  • See the official technical language here: CofC Course Numbering Policy (7.6.9 on the CofC policy website)

What is the difference between "Course Repeatability" and "Credit Limits?"

Some courses are designed to be repeated when the content of the course changes (e.g. Special Topics) or the nature of the student experience changes (e.g. Internship). All other courses may only be completed for credit one time. Courses, when designed as repeatable, may be repeated without limit.

Limits may be imposed on the application of course credit to a major and/or minor. For example, if a department creates a new Special Topics course and designates it as repeatable a student may take the course an infinite number of times. However, the department may decide that only 6 credit hours of that course may be applied in completing the major. To apply that limit, the department must submit the appropriate program change form in Curriculog (accessed via MyPortal, on the Faculty tab).

What is included in a Cover Letter?

The purpose of a cover letter, when requested in Curriculog, is to inform workflow reviewers of the overall goal of the curriculum proposal and not to repeat the details of the Curriculog form submission. Make sure to attach your cover letter to the form under the Files tab.

A cover letter should always be attached when any of the following conditions are met:

  • The form instructions specifically request a cover letter.
  • The curriculum proposal is a collaboration between more than one department or program.
  • The overarching curriculum change/addition/termination includes multiple Curriculog forms. In this case, a cover letter should alert reviewers to the multiple parts of the comprehensive package as well as address the overarching goal of the proposal. Make sure to note in the cover letter each Curriculog form associated.

The following types of proposals require a cover letter. The instructions within the form will prompt you to attach one.

  • Major/Program/Certificate : New
  • Major/Program/Certificate : Change
  • Major/Program/Certificate : Termination
  • Minor : New
  • Minor : Change/Termination

Where can I get Curriculog assistance? Are there any trainings or workshops?

For Curriculog assistance, email the College's Curriculog Support at CurriculogHelp@cofc.edu or view the College of Charleston Curriculog Guidebook

We also offer training for everyone who may be submitting curricular proposals and for everyone who is responsible for reviewing proposals as they move through the approval process. Attendance at a training session is strongly recommended. Additional open workshops will also be available for faculty members to drop by with their current curriculum proposal material. Upcoming Curriculog system training sessions and open workshops dates are posted below. Sessions are facilitated by the Curriculog System Administrator, Mark Del Mastro, the Associate Provost for Curriculum and Academic Administration and the Registrar's Office's Catalog and Curriculum Systems Manager, Franklin Czwazka. Together, they monitor the curriculoghelp@cofc.edu email account.

Curriculog user training is organized into three session types, and open workshops are also provided as outlined below.
1. Curriculog Originator Sessions (by RSVP)

Originator training is intended for all faculty members who plan to submit curriculum change proposals. Advice on curriculum proposal content will not be covered during the Curriculog system training sessions.

2. Curriculog Reviewer Sessions

Reviewer training is intended for faculty and administrators who are in 'reviewer/approver' roles for curriculum proposals. This includes (but is not limited to) program directors, department chairs, deans, Faculty Senate curriculum committee chairs, the Faculty Secretary, and the Speaker of the Faculty. Advice on curriculum proposal content will not be covered during the Curriculog system training sessions.

3. Faculty Curriculum Committee (FCC) Senator Sessions

FCC Senator sessions are intended for the Senate committees who are included in the Curriculog workflow: the Curriculum Committee (undergraduate proposals), the Committee on Graduate Education (graduate proposals), and the Committee on General Education (General Education proposals). Two additional committees are brought in for program curricular proposals with significant changes: the Budget Committee and the Academic Planning Committee. Advice on curriculum proposal content will not be covered during the Curriculog system training sessions.

4. Open Workshops

Open workshops will be available for faculty members to drop by with their current curriculum proposal material. These workshops will be held in a computer lab in ECTR 110, so faculty will be able to access their email accounts and the Curriculog system to work on their current curriculum proposal(s). Mark Del Mastro and Franklin Cwaska will be on hand to aid with technical questions as needed. No RSVP is required.

  • TBD

Please email curriculoghelp@cofc.edu to request any additional information.

What is Curriculog? When did the College start using it?

Curriculog is the College's online curriculum management system. The College transitioned the curriculum processes from paper forms to Curriculog by Digarc in Fall 2017. Curriculog allows the College to maintain one, single version of each curricular proposal; provides advanced organization for proposal originators and reviewers; and offers full transparency of the workflow process. Curriculog is connected with Acalog, the College's online catalog. This allows users to import courses and programs from next year's draft catalog to create proposals for modification. Through this integration, users are always operating with the most current information for curriculum proposals. Users also have the ability to run impact reports to see what other courses and programs would be affected by the change being proposed.
