About the Course-Instructor Surveys

What are Course-Instructor Surveys?

Course-Instructor Surveys are an important tool for students to provide anonymous feedback at the end of a course about their instructors, course content, and their overall experience.

Are the results really anonymous?

Yes! Your log in information is not submitted as part of the feedback data, therefore all Course-Instructor Surveys results are 100% anonymous.

If Surveys are anonymous, why do I have to log in?

The log in is used to:

    • Verify that you are eligible to complete Course-Instructor Surveys.
    • Determine which courses are to be evaluated by you.
    • Determine which courses have already been reviewed by you.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Your log in information is NOT submitted as part of the feedback data, therefore ALL Course-Instructor Surveys results ARE ANONYMOUS.

Why are they important?

Student feedback is vital to the content and delivery of courses at CofC. Course-Instructor survey results are used by faculty to improve teaching and are a component in the promotion and tenure process of faculty.

What happens to the results?

The results are viewed by College’s administrators and faculty. Information gathered is used as part of the process to improve instruction at the College of Charleston. Results, including any students' anonymous free response comments, are made available to the instructor of each section only after the final grading deadline has passed. Results are not released prior to this.

How long does it take?

Each questionnaire typically takes between 5 minutes to complete, but may take more or less time depending on your personal choices.

Why are they online?

In an effort to streamline the process, CofC transitioned to an online Course-Instructor Survey system. The online system is convenient, efficient and environmentally friendly.

Will instructors be able to see results before grades are posted?

No. Results are not available until after finals are complete and all grades have been posted.

Administering Surveys (faculty instructors)

Am I required to administer Course-Instructor Surveys in-class during the semester?

Yes. The College's policy requires that you set aside 15-20 minutes to administer Course-Instructor Surveys in class. Please see the Faculty User Guide for additional details.

As a faculty member, how do I monitor my section(s)’ response rates?

Click on the Course-Instructor Survey channel within OAKS.  Please monitor your response rates throughout the administration period and encourage students to complete all of their Course-Instructor Surveys. You can only see the response rates while Course-Instructor Surveys are still open and will not have access to any of the results until after the final grading deadline. Please see the Faculty User Guide. for detailed instructions and screenshots.

Is there a Course-Instructor Surveys Guide for Faculty?

Yes. Please reference the Faculty User Guide.

What are the faculty incentives for completing Course-Instructor Surveys?

Aside from the benefits of the student feedback itself, all faculty members achieving a 75% response rate or above in all of their included course sections are automatically entered into a drawing. From this group of eligible faculty, four will be randomly selected and given their choice of Research and Development funds or College of Charleston technology (i.e. iPad) of equal price. These winners are selected and announced twice a year: after the Fall full semester Survey period, and after the Spring full semester Survey period. Incentives and terms of these conditions are subject to change without notice.

How can I help increase my students’ response rates?

  1. Make announcements regularly in class
  2. Explain how student feedback is useful to you personally and to the improvement of our courses
  3. Show students how to access Course-Instructor Surveys
  4. Administer Course-Instructor Surveys in class using laptops or mobile devices (mandatory)
  5. Add the special link to your email signature or website during the administration period

How can students access Course-Instructor Surveys?

Alternatively, students and faculty may access them via: the link emailed several times during the administration period; the link on MyCharleston under the Academic Services tab; or the link on OAKS.

How and when do I administer Course-Instructor Surveys in class?

You are now required to reserve time during class to administer your Course-Instructor Surveys.  Students can easily complete Surveys on mobile devices and laptops anytime during the open administration period.  You can pick any time during the open period to administer them, and our office will be having promotional flyers throughout the administration period.  Simply pick a date, announce it to your class in advance and ask students to bring their mobile devices, and plan to provide a few extra iPads and/or ask students to share devices.  On your designated day, talk about the value of student feedback or encourage students to complete their Course-Instructor Surveys, assign a volunteer student assistant to help, leave the room for a while, and then afterwards check your response rates to see if your whole class participated.  Please see the Faculty User Guide for additional details.

How do I monitor my section(s)’ response rates?

Click on the course Survey channel within OAKS.  Please monitor your response rates throughout the administration period and encourage students to complete all of their Course-Instructor Surveys. Please reference the Faculty User Guide for instructions on how to view your reports.

To protect anonymity, only courses with two or more students are administered, and all answers and comments must remain anonymous. No attempts shall be made to compromise the anonymity of Course-Instructor Surveys.

What are the student incentives for completing Course-Instructor Surveys?

Students who complete Course-Instructor Surveys for all of their courses will be entered into a drawing for priority registration or an extra graduation ticket (seniors only). Incentives and terms of these conditions are subject to change without notice. Please feel free to remind your students about this incentive or any other encouragements you can offer them in completing all of their Course-Instructor Surveys.
